Road Rights Question #48
Take the quiz!

The Question:
The above picture shows a bicyclist turning left next to a vehicle that is also turning left. Is it legal for the bicyclist to turn left from the far right side or the lane or must the bicyclist merge into traffic to make this turn?
The Answer: Legal but Unwise
The Idaho State Code does not address this scenario. It states that if a lane is too narrow for a bicycle and vehicle to travel safely side by side the bicyclist may take control of as much of the lane as is necessary. In this instance, the bicyclist should move to the center of the lane while preparing to make a left turn.
This answer is based on Idaho state code 49-717 (1)(b)(c); 49-644(2).
