#RoadRights Situation 8 – Jogger in the bike lane.

Published by Anna Marie on

Play along! Did you guess correctly?

The Answer: Move to the sidewalk to continue jogging.

There is a sidewalk available for the jogger to use. Bike lanes are for people on bikes. Jogging in the bike lane creates an unsafe situation for all road users, especially the person riding the bike. In conditions where bike lanes exist but no sidewalk, pedestrians may need to use the bike lane as a shoulder to be safe. However, they should do so with the understanding that they must move aside for anyone approaching them on a bike in the bike lane. Not doing so forces the person biking out into the traffic lane, potentially placing them in an unsafe situation. The bicyclist may look back and merge into the driver’s lane if safe to accommodate the jogger.
